Who is a Candidate for Sedation?

Types of Sedation We Offer

Sleep Dentistry: IV Sedation
IV Sedation is the deepest level of sedation available in private dental offices, and only certified sedation dentists are able to offer the service. At Smile Design Dental, our patients can elect to enjoy this comfortable sedation option to help them overcome their fears or discomfort surrounding dental care.
Our dentists typically recommend IV sedation to patients that:
- Have moderate to severe anxiety
- Need to have their wisdom teeth removed
- Require more complex treatment, such as dental implants
- Want to complete all of their care at one time
- Choose to have treatment completed outside of the hospital
Conscious Sedation: Oral Sedation
One of the simplest ways to experience a relaxing dental appointment is to request oral sedation. This process uses a prescription strength sedative that is taken by mouth before the procedure, and it’s safe for all ages, including children.
Oral sedation provides a deeper relaxation than nitrous oxide. Most people report that it makes them feel like they are napping or daydreaming through their dental visit. Our south Florida sedation dentists can still ask you simple questions, but most likely you will not remember anything at all!

Conscious Sedation: Nitrous Oxide
Laughing gas is a gentle and safe way to enjoy mild sedation during your dental procedure. It can be added onto even routine appointments like dental cleanings, fillings, or even longer visits like root canals.
Nitrous oxide is a combination of pure oxygen and nitrous gases that are inhaled through a soft nosepiece. Within just a few minutes you will begin to feel more relaxed and warm down to your fingers and toes.
If you want the mildest form of sedative available, nitrous oxide is the right choice for you. It’s perfect for adults as well as kids and wears off after just a few minutes so that everyone can go back to their normal schedules.
