Store-bought whitening kits can be unreliable, and some have the propensity to harm your smile instead of brightening it. Opalescence® teeth whitening gel is a dentist-endorsed solution to removing stains in the comfort of your own home. The first bleaching compound to be approved by the American Dental Association, Opalescence® has made the process both more comfortable and easier than ever before.
Instead of trusting mass-produced, ill-fitting receptacles to provide adequate contact for whitening materials, the Opalescence® method utilizes trays specially designed for your mouth. This provides superior coverage, allowing the gel to coat every inch of your teeth. Teeth Whitening: Common Questions
How much does professional whitening cost?
In-office Zoom costs more than take-home trays because it is a single supervised appointment with a stronger gel. Both are well below any other cosmetic treatment we offer.
Is it better than drugstore strips?
Considerably. Over-the-counter products use a much weaker gel and a tray that does not fit your mouth, so the gel reaches some teeth and not others. Professional gel is stronger and the trays are made from impressions of your own teeth.
Will it make my teeth sensitive?
Some patients feel short bursts of cold sensitivity for a day or two. It settles on its own. Tell us beforehand if your teeth are already sensitive — we adjust the gel concentration and the wear time.
How white will my teeth actually get?
Six to ten shades is typical with in-office Zoom. Yellow-toned staining responds best; gray staining from tetracycline responds least, and for those cases veneers are usually the honest answer.
Will it whiten my crowns or veneers?
No. Porcelain and composite do not respond to whitening gel at all. Whiten your natural teeth first, then match any crowns or bonding to the new shade.
How long do results last?
One to three years, depending on what you drink and whether you smoke. A take-home touch-up kit keeps the result topped up without another appointment.
Is it safe for my enamel?
Yes, when supervised. The peroxide in professional gel is well studied and does not soften enamel at the concentrations and exposure times we use.
Can I whiten while pregnant?
We recommend waiting. There is no evidence of harm, but there is also no reason to take an elective cosmetic treatment during pregnancy.
